I bought Transport Tycoon for PC & Playstation One back in the day and I would hate to think people would play his games without paying for them. I mean, none of us want to see Chris out of pocket. With regards to the legal issues, it's tricky. Opening RCT1 to Mac's, Linux & PSPs sounds like something very doable and I bet a few programmers have done it already. I didn't know about all of the legal disputes and the different program languages used. Just the ability to play the original Roller Coaster Tycoon across all platforms would be amazing, and maybe even stop my addiction to Transport Tycoon. It doesn't have to be as fancy as OTTD, there's no need for all the patching and cheating. The only way I can ever see this addiction ending is with the creation of Open Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I've given the island of Phuket in Thiland a more pioneering transport system than Transport for London, I've delivered more coal than I think currently exists and I've caused bigger crowds at airport pile ups than 9/11.

Adding some sort of cargo destination patch for passengers would be a step in the right direction, but the interface is clunky (especially for underground construction), the maps are too small to create half-decent networks and the in-game world isn't particularly easy on the eyes, either, mostly because it's just inconsistent.Īnd, yes, all of these things could hypothetically be fixed either as a component of a patch or as add-ons for one, but considering that all they'd be doing is duplicating the work done on OTTD/TTDP on a graphically larger scale, it seems to me rather futile.Ĭracking open one of the RCTs would at least have the benefits of being a unique game which doesn't need immediate and substantial "fixing" before it would be playable on the scale of existing projects.Įver since I discovered this bloody game I've been hooked. Speaking just for myself, I always found it thoroughly unenjoyable to play.
